Welcome to the Treatment of Trauma Online Program
This is an 8-week program made up of four Sections including Education, Relaxation, Cognitive Restructuring, and Exposure. These sections will provide you with information and skills to help you better adjust to traumatic events. With each section, examples are given to help you better understand types of traumatic events, common reactions to trauma, and skills to help in your adjustment to trauma. In fact, you might find an example that is similar to your experience.

Below is a time-table of the estimated amount of time it will take you to complete each section. These are guidelines - you are allowed to spend longer time to complete the sections or you could finish the sections more quickly than the guidelines. We strongly encourage you to take as much time as necessary to learn the skills and information contained in each section. Simply reading through each section will likely not be very helpful to you. Rather, this program will be most helpful if you approach each section honestly, practicing each skill as much as you need to, and being honest with yourself about how well you are learning each skill. We have included self-tests to help you monitor how much you are learning, but ultimately how much you get out of this program is up to you.

Section Estimated Time to Complete
Education A Few Days
Relaxation 1-3 Weeks
Cognitive Restructuring 2-3 Weeks
Exposure 2-3 Weeks

Again, when you finish one section, you are encouraged to practice it as many times as possible. Practice helps you master the skills to help you better adjust to the the traumatic event(s) you experienced.

Program Format: All of the materials you need to complete this program are provided in written format. Each section of this program will also allow you to watch a brief video to gain a better understanding of the information in this program. Some sections also will include audio files that may help you master the information and skills. While it is not necessary to make use of the video and audio files, they are provided for your use, and we recommend that you use them if you are able.

Program Timeline: We will be looking at your symptoms over the course of this program. This begins with the meeting you had at the Salem VA Medical Center's Center for Traumatic Stress. In addition, we will ask you to complete a few simple on-line questionnaires over the course of the program. You will be asked to enter your personal code number that was provided to you at your meeting with us at the Salem VA Medical Center. This ensures that your answers remain confidential. Some of these questionnaires relate to your safety, while others ask about thoughts or feelings that you may be having. It is important for us to monitor these thoughts and feelings to make sure that you are safe and are benefiting from the program.

After you finish the on-line program, you will be asked to meet with us again at the Salem VA Medical Center's Center for Traumatic Stress. This meeting will be very similar to the one you have had already. At this time, you and the clinician will discuss progress you have made and any other services that might be recommended.
